Telepathy, in Zettai Karen Children, is the ability for someone to read someone's memories, feelings and thoughts. And also to send her own thoughts but like...that doesn't require permission, surely.

HOWEVER, please keep in mind that Yuuri will not actively try to read your character for no reason and OOCly I will never have her read more than what I have permission to.

Here is a handy-dandy infographic for you to reference as to how reading memories works with telepathy. The closer the memory is to the outer layers (i.e. the newer it is), the less effort it takes for Yuuri to read it.

**Recalled Memories: These are memories that your character specifically brings up during a situation, but isn't normally on their mind at all times. For instance, a beloved childhood pet, or an embarrassing memory.

She cannot read all of your memories all at once. Instead, memories are like layers, the older they are the more difficult it is to read them. Repressed/suppressed memories could be physically/emotionally/mentally dangerous for both your character as well as for Yuuri to bring out with telepathy so we should hash that out if you ever feel the need for that to happen.

Anyways, this means that it's time for a handy permissions post!

Yuuri also has a second power known as hypno which allows the creation of illusions but also to manipulate memories. The illusions go beyond just sensory illusions and can actually cause people to die or pass out in certain cases. Again, this wouldn't be used without hashing things out before hand!

Even in canon her powers don't work perfectly every time! So feel free to say no to any of this!

NAME: Kumoi Yuuri/Julie
CANON: Zettai Karen Children
CANON POINT: Chapter 420
AGE: 16
BACKGROUND: https://zettaikarenchildren.fandom.com/wiki/Mirage

The tragedy of Yuuri's life began before she was born. Her parents had no sooner been married before her mother fell into a coma. She had been an esper that hadn't realized it and accidentally put herself into a feedback loop (where an esp user reads themselves or uses hypnosis on themselves) which resulted in a coma that she'd never wake up from.

This tragedy made Yuuri's father hate espers. As a result, using his wife and his own genetic material, he created two children: Gilliam and Yuuri (though it seems when they talk to her her name seems to be "Julie").

Gilliam had psychic powers but he was sickly as a child and so was sent to one of the other houses and essentially discarded when Yuuri came into the picture later.

Unlike Gilliam, Yuuri was the perfect picture of health and, not only that, her psychic powers were incredibly strong, clocking in at Level 7 (which means it's stronger than current modern equiment can read).

She became the center of Black Phantom's mind control network, taking control of the minds of numerous espers in the world and turning them into mindless tools that obeyed her every order. These espers were then sold as mercenaries to the highest bidder.

All the while, Yuuri was praised for all this and told she was a "good girl". She ate up this praise, mistaking it for love and, having known nothing else all her life, started to believe that treating people as tools and toys was a valid form of love.

At some point, Yuuri came to resent her father and what she did. Unable to reconcile this resentment and her need to be loved by her father, she developed a second personality known in the series as Phantom.

She might have gone on living like this if one of their espers hadn't been removed from the mind-control network without being killed (the until now only way to escape Black Phantom's control). They lost him while he was on a mission that was interrupted by the arrival of Japan's only team of Level 7 espers, the Children. Yuuri, while not physically present, was able to sense the moment the mind control that had sunk its claws into the boy's brain had been removed.

Wanting more information on the power that had been used to free the esper under their control, Yuuri's father sent her to go undercover at the school where the Children went to school and befriend them to get closer to Akashi Kaoru, the future Queen of Espers.

However the plan backfires because as Yuuri got closer to the Children, the more she started to break away from Black Phantom. But she may never have had the courage to betray them if the leader of the esper criminal organization PANDRA hadn't put her under hypno, putting her two other personalities, Mirage and Phantom to sleep, leaving the fake personality of "Yuuri" to pilot the ship (but this only worked because Mirage and Phantom wanted a normal life, if only for a little while).

For some time, Yuuri got to live her life like a normal child, without any awareness of her powers or her past (or the fact that Black Phantom had been sending people to retrieve her while members of Pandra helped protect her from them).

But Hyoubu Kyousuke had meant to give her a chance to choose her future; this was never meant to last. Eventually she began to remember her real past and what she had done but she still clung to the illusion until the moment she realized that people were not things that could be owned or bought or sold, that friends were not toys and what her father had shown her wasn't love. When she realized that, her three personality combined and for the first time in a while she was a whole person.

Having realized the error of her ways, she couldn't just sit around idly and wait for someone else to solve the problem of Black Phantom. Knowing they'd follow her (and believing they'd hate her), she erased herself from the memories of all her friends before she left to confront Black Phantom with the resolution to kill her brother and father.

PERSONALITY:

Yuuri is incredibly kind and protective of the people she cares about. Her past and her guilt about it makes her strive to not hurt anyone unnecessarily, especially if they were a victim of her father or brother. She is clumsy and flusters easily when it has to do with people she cares deeply about.

Even after the merging of her personalities, Yuuri continued to be a girl of contradictions. She is kind but at the same time capable of ruthlessness, unwilling to let go of the bonds she has but at the same time determined to cut herself from her past, her family and her friends in an attempt to atone.

But also: desperately wanting forgiveness while persistently denying herself any chance at redemption.

Around her friends, she's sweet if a bit of a pushover. She's clumsy but sincere in her treatment of them even when 'Yuuri' had been nothing more than a fake personality, going so far as to deny what Mirage wanted in order to spend time with her friends. She is the sort of person who treasures every good memory.

At the same time though, she holds her friends at arms length, not letting them know about the reservations she has about herself, even going so far as to wipe the memories of herself from their minds at one point. She does this because she's afraid of being rejected if her friends find out about her past.

Or worse yet, that they would forgive her.

This is the biggest contradiction of Yuuri's character: wanting happiness and yet being afraid of having it. She wants love, wants friendship and she wants redemption. However, her belief that she doesn't deserve such things make her afraid of being rejected or, worse yet, to achieve them because someone like her cannot have them and she'd certainly lose them or destroy them in the end.

She has learned to be considerate of people and their feelings once she realized people are not objects to be owned. She's not very good at it however. For example, she'd apologize for making unreasonable demands, and does her best to keep her friends out of danger and help them stop fighting. But she doesn't take anyone's feelings into account when she went off to fight Black Phantom and even purposefully brainwashed people who had said they wanted to help her to give them a safe, peaceful life against their wishes.

Outside of more serious context though, Yuuri can be quite socially awkward, often freaking out inwardly or where no one can see her over small things like a friend coming to stay over. This sort of over-the-top reactions are a result of her upbringing, but even after she's mellowed out and had more experience with healthy social interactions she still has a tendency to over-react to certain situations especially if it has to do with her close friends.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Yuuri is an esper, meaning she has psychic powers. In Zettai Karen Children, psychic powers are ranked from Level 1 to Level 7, with Level 1 being so weak and underdevelopped the user can barely control it or do anything with it. They may as well be a normal person. Level 6 is the highest level at which their powers can be measured. Anything beyond that is considered Level 7 and they are incredibly rare (and also varies a lot in power levels).

Yuuri is a Level 7 Hypno user.

1: Hypno: Basically the ability to manipulate chemicals in the mind to make a person see illusions. What someone can do with hypno depends on the user's level. At Yuuri's level, she can:
- create realistic illusions. In Zettai Karen Children, hypno is dangerous because even if you know it's fake a strong hypno user can make your body believe it is going through the illusions. So if the hypno makes someone's mind believe it is bleeding to death, the body will react as if it is going into shock even if there's nothing physically wrong with it. Or if a character is made to believe their legs have turned into gelatin they will not be able to stand even if there's nothing physically wrong with their legs.
- Yuuri can create an illusion, but she can also use hypno to make someone see something they think of. The difference being that in the first case she creates an image and in the second she leaves it to the person she's using hypno on to create an image. In the second case even she cannot see what the illusion is.
- If she is near someone with psychic powers she can force them to activate it.
- Using hypno she can manipulate other people's memory and personalities. This is hard to do. Even Yuuri, who is arguably the series' strongest hypno user in terms of raw power, has to take advantage of weaknesses in a person's psyche to do this. If a person has had a memory or moment in time where they were on the verge of despair, she can take advantage of this weakness to get a foothold in their mind. Similarly, if someone gives her permission to change their memories around then she can do it without much trouble.

2: Telepathy: The ability to read people's thoughts. Higher level espers (which Yuuri counts as) can perform something called a Psycho Dive where they go deep into a person's psyche. Going into the mind of an esper always comes with certain dangers because their minds tend to fight back and could potentially drag the esper doing the dive into their minds and they will never wake up again.

Telepathy, no matter how high a level, is limited by certain factors such as how deeply buried the thoughts are and whether there is something else someone is thinking. of. For example, one tactic characters in canon have developed for preventing a telepath from reading their minds is to think about one thing very strongly so it interferes in the reading and it's shown to be extremely effective. Hypnosis is technically a Synthetic power (a power that works by combining a number of other psychic powers) so it can't work without telepathy.

While Yuuri's power may seem too strong, there are a lot of limits beyond the ones listed. Yuuri always has a harder time using her power on anyone who has psychic powers, and the stronger they are the more they can resist. Also some people are naturally resistent to psychic powers even without psychic powers themselves. Psychic powers can also be cancelled out by machines that broadcast signals at a certain frequency.

Also, Yuuri cannot use her powers on herself as that will create a feedback loop which canonly was what caused her to mother to fall into a coma. And any head injuries or serious fevers will cause her to lose control of her powers. Furthermore, it's been shown that Level 7s have powers that develop faster than their bodies can handle and while we've never been told what Yuuri's limits are, it is almost certain that she has them too and so how often she can use her powers with impunity is also limited.

CANON HISTORY:

Since the ZKC Wiki has next to nothing about the manga you get a summary.

And that is the point where I'm taking her.

CANON PERSONALITY: In the beginning, Yuuri was split into three distinct personalities: Mirage, the cold brainwasher of Black Phantom, obedient to her Father and seemingly uncaring about the fate of others. Phantom's Daughter (also known as Phantom), the deranged uncontrollable aspect of her personality that resented their father and treated other people as her playthings.

Then there was Yuuri, a fake self created by Mirage to help her go undercover. Yuuri was a kind hearted, naive and easily swayed girl who was always smiling and enjoyed spending time with her friends. While Yuuri was a fake personality she had everything Mirage and Phantom's Daughter had craved and been denied (people that cared about them, freedom to choose what to do with their lives, happy memories) and as such as time went on the fake personality was able to exert control over their actions that should have been impossible for her to do.

By the time of the canon point Yuri came from, she had managed to combine the three personalities, when she was able to understand that what she really wanted was to be free and that she didn't want to go back to Black Phantom.

Now, the main personality still seems to be that of "Yuuri", but Mirage's fierce loyalty, her determination to do whatever it takes to protect the things important to her, as well as Phantom Daughter's hate of being chained and of Black Phantom (it's also visible later on when she makes a really scary face to a character who has a crush on her most important person).

However, the combining of her personalities have made her stronger, more decisive, but, Yuuri is still trying to come to terms with what she did in the past. She's still over-wrought with guilt which leads her to believe that she can't be forgiven and doesn't deserve happiness. She can't reconcile that belief with how badly she wants to be happy, to have friends and family who love her, to just have a normal life.

So while she shows great determination in destroying Black Phantom, in never using her powers to turn people into her dolls she falters when her brother confronts her with an illusion of what she wanted the most and the thing that she doesn't think she can have.

Yuuri is incredibly kind and protective of the people she cares about. Her past and her guilt about it makes her strive to not hurt anyone unnecessarily, especially if they were a victim of her father or brother. She is clumsy and flusters easily when it has to do with people she cares deeply about.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Yuuri Kumoi
AU AGE: 13
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None.

AU HISTORY:

Unlike in canon, Yuuri was raised by her mother and was estranged from her father and brother (the relationship has been agreed upon with [personal profile] judgementkazzy). Her mother did her best to raise Yuuri on her own, but in order to do that she spent a lot of time working and not at home. In response to this, Yuuri became quieter, trying to be obedient and not cause her mother any trouble.

In the end though, her mother overworked herself and, after a stroke, ended up in a coma while Yuuri was still in grade school. Even now, Yuuri feels vaguely that it was her fault that her mother ended up that way.

After that, Yuuri had been passed from family member to to family member on her mother's side of the family. Owing to a combination of her constant moving from place to place and her shyness, Yuuri never had many friends.

She had a few acquaintances that could have become better friends for her if not for a couple of reasons. One being the amount of time she'd spent in one place before she had to move. Being in an area for a limited amount of time did not help her foster deeper friendships. The other was that Yuuri just found it hard to keep up with people she knew for fear of bothering them.

It's hard enough to make new friends when you're constantly the new kid, it's even harder because Yuuri has come to understand that people in her life just do not seem to stay.

If her past friendships have had any impact on her it was to convince her that she'd like friends, but she doesn't seem to be any good at making them. It ends with her trying to be kind, and trying to connect with people but being a bit unsure of the 'how' and ends up becoming a bit of a doormat around people.

Instead, she spent a lot of time day dreaming about what her father and brother might be like. She never really thought she'd meet them, however (and thought a little that maybe if they did meet they wouldn't want her) and so she never sought them out.

Her mother had never really talked about her father and since mentions of him tended to make her mother upset Yuuri brought that particular subject up rarely. When her mother went into a coma Yuuri might have had some notion that she'd end up living with her father. When that wasn't the case she had to assume that maybe it was because he didn't want anything to do with her because the thought of asking made her nervous.

Partly because it wasn't a topic that her extended family wanted to talk about, but also because she can't help but wonder if her father hadn't left because of her. (No one had mentioned that her father was actually incarcerated). It was safer to just imagine what they might be like. Even if fantasies aren't real, they couldn't hurt her.

The most recent move for her is being sent to Recolle to live with her uncle (agreed upon with [personal profile] starfruitfrog), since her aunt has said that it'd benefit her to see more of the world.

She's not expecting things to be much different this time around. She may be starting middleschool in a new country, but there's no reason to expect that her stay will be anything but temporary. As long as she's here though, she intends to make the best of things and help her uncle out as much as she can.

At this point in her life, though she hadn't gone to a different country, she has been moved around enough that she's a bit desensitized to the thought of going to a new school and a new home.

She probably did her research about life abroad through pop culture things like tv shows or movies. She expected things to be different but at the same time she didn't expect things to be too different from her usual routine of being the new kid, learning where the library is, and getting a feel for the city until she's shuffled along to the next family.

So the culture shock and homesickness probably take her by surprise and don't really hit her until she actually starts living there and realizes how different things are. She's woefully under-prepared and she will probably spend some time writing off most strange happenings as just culture shock.

She probably does miss Japan though, because for all that she had moved around a lot there was an overall, uniform culture there. She probably hadn't noticed it as much when she lived there, having noticed the difference between the cities more but now that she's away from it she misses some of the things she had taken to be universal across all the places she had lived that are now missing from her life.

It'd prompt her to visit the local cultural centre and to gravitate towards things or people that remind her more of home (so people who are Japanese or who came from another country).

Apart from all the moving around though, her life was remarkably devoid of anything too out of the norm and lived a relatively peaceful existence. Despite the loneliness she had never been treated exceptionally poorly by the families that took care of her though she never found a way to make a place in their homes for herself.

AU PERSONALITY: Her personality is pretty similar to the fake personality Yuuri with some self-doubt about how she's a problem that people keep shuffling around. Her self-doubt is less crippling than in canon and she doesn't have quite as much guilt or is as determined since she hadn't gone through as terrible a childhood (since she hasn't gone around for over a decade of her life actively ruining other people's loves).

She does have more of an abandonment issue than in canon, from being passed from family to family. Also, where in canon she craves love as well as believes her family cannot love her, she'd be ecstatic to find out she has family here and she'd love to invite them into her life. Her desire for a family, however, is consistent between her AU self and her canon self.

Canon Yuuri also has more of a ruthless streak. While she'd rather not backslide into being a terrible person when there is no other choice she is capable of choosing to kill one of her clones (even if she didn't have to in the end). She definitely had no qualms about trying to murder her brother and father. In this AU, Yuuri, having grown up in a relatively normal world, wouldn't possess this ruthlessness.
